This table began with a visit to my local sawyer, where my client and I spent time working through the available slabs together. He picked this one: a live edge Sweet Chestnut slab from a tree felled locally in Kent.
The beautiful grain tells the story of the tree: remarkable ripple and figure that swirls and shifts across the surface, unique to this particular piece of timber. The live edge has been kept intact in order to show off this tree's full character.
The base is hand-carved English Ash, shaped entirely by hand in the workshop to create an organic, flowing form that complements the slab above. Every curve was refined slowly until it felt right.
The table is finished with Rubio Monocoat oil; a natural, hard-wearing treatment that protects the timber without filling the grain or masking the character of the wood and keeping the tactile nature of the grain.
My client was absolutely delighted with the finished piece, and it's not hard to see why it became the centrepiece of his living room.
This table is now in its new home in Sevenoaks.
